A businessman was attending a company meeting in Chicago when all power fails. Cars and trucks stop, planes fall from the sky, and cell phones fail. Everything that has anything to do with the movement of electrons is useless. Not knowing the cause of the failure or how long it will last, he is forced to make a decision to sit it out in Chicago or try to get home to his wife in Alabama.

The author might have had a first rate survival story if he had just used common sense as the novel rolled out. However the plot just got more and more ridiculous. He guided his family hundreds of miles on bicycles finding food whenever it was necessary, a truck load here, a convenience store there. Just no problem! (When he found the truck loaded with food why the heck didn't he stock up enough for the entire journey?) They now encounter a small band of teens who come at them with guns blazing. He calmly mows them down with just his faithful .22 rifle. Very big task! We have been told that our hero only has one pistol with very few bullets. Did he stop to pickup the weapons the boys were shooting? No, that would be using his head, he just moved on. I did find it amusing that every evening they stopped to camp, he found a nice fresh water pond to take a bath! They get home and life just goes on just swell except for one bad guy who is a pervert peeping-tom. Just kill him, no problem! One last item that convinced me that the author has no knowledge of guns is when our hero and his grandson go hunting for a Thanksgiving turkey using a shotgun with a SCOPE! All I could do is laugh out loud! (I also kind of wonder what came of the husky puppy they saved in their journey. Never was mentioned again. Oh the heck with this novel, its a waste of time!Product details

The Switch 2001 By John Sullins Jim Massie Books Reviews
Nothing complicated, easy read, enjoyable.
What happens in this book could happen any day to all of us. It was interesting to put myself in the position of the main character and ask what I would do under the same circumstances of being hundreds of miles from home with no vehicle, no phone, no car, no electricity.
I gave the book 5 stars and I am not sure about my choice. The book was a good read I will give the author that but I question the level of violence one would encounter passing through Chicago or St. Louis in the aftermath of such an event. That is my only complaint. A good read otherwise.
I tried, I really tried with this book. I read the early reviews and thought that perhaps with the complexity of the plot, if I just kept reading...but I find that I am in agreement with those that find little redeeming value and almost nothing to like about the main character. I have heard it said that adversity often brings out the worst in people. I find with this protagonist the tendency was already there just waiting for an excuse to roar. 1/2 star and a good editor is recommended, deleting encouraged.
This is certainty not the first story written about solar storms wrecking all things electrical, nor will it be the last. The storyline and characters, though, are excellent.
There is a handful of typographical errors, but if you overlook those you will be rewarded with a read that leaves you asking about your own ability to survive if we were suddenly without electricity.
The book that I downloaded called "The Switch" ended up being called
"From the Beginning "-which is a completely different storyline than The Switch
Kind of a different take on the whole thing. I keep expecting bad guys to show up, nobody is ever on gaurd duty. They build fires every night. Had a chuckle when the Sears store in Chicago is still locked and untouched 3 weeks after emp. There are better stories that deal with the details better, but for 99 cents, it's good enough.
The comments about the typos is correct and we apologize for the errors.
We thought we had entered the edited version of the book but that version was not loaded.
We have re-edited the book and re-posted the new version.
We are sorry for the mistake.
Please don't give up on us.
Thanks
John Sullins and Jim Massie.
