A Dangerous Affair A Romantic Suspense Novel edition by Jason Melby Romance eBooks

A handsome anti-hero and a beautiful heroine in distress, both of whom tug at your heartstrings are pitted against a formidable antagonist who almost has superhuman qualities, albeit on the dark side. That is the premise of A Dangerous Affair and it catches your attention from page 1, never letting up until the end.

The story of Lloyd Sullivan, an ex-convict on parole and Jaime Blanchart who is trapped in a bad marriage to the town's sheriff, "A Dangerous Affair" is a suspense thriller with a little romance thrown in. In fact, if I want to be technical about it, the affair between Lloyd and Jaime is a sidebar to the main story of Jaime's husband, Alan Blanchart, dirty cop, abusive husband and psychotic killer hiding behind a badge.

But, don't think that this story is formulaic or a cliche. The author Jason Melby created unforgettable characters and fleshed them out nicely - the protagonists, the antagonists and the supporting characters. The story is fast-paced and it gets your adrenaline going.

So, why am I giving it only three stars? It's because I feel as if this book is the conclusion of a two-part book. The author never explained why and how Lloyd went to jail. Or what role did Lloyd's brother Josh played? There is also Jaime, who from her musings was a very independent woman before she married Alan. Then, how did she end up marrying Alan when she is from New York.

There were so many unanswered questions, and there will be a lot of spoilers if I ask them here. That said, I actually had to check the book several times if this book is not the second-half of a two-part book.

This book is Rated M for Mature due to sex and violence.

A Dangerous Affair A Romantic Suspense Novel edition by Jason Melby Romance eBooks Reviews

This was a very good book. I enjoyed reading it and hated to put it down. This was the best book that I've read lately.
I recommend this book to anyone who believes in second chances and love at first sight.  Great insight for helping soomeone dealing with domestic abuse.
I did not care for the killings of this storyline. Guess I should have paid better attention to the previous reviews. I would have been really upset if I had paid alot for this read.
This book isn't a bad book. It has a good story of good versus evil mixed with romance and murder thriller. I guess my major complaint is that it switches between the characters' stories too much for my taste. It works, but sometimes it gives you whiplash.
Any reality in this novel does not exist. Much of it is drama through stupidity. the author knows nothing about the guns he writes about. Hardly anyone on earth can take a snub nosed .22 cal pistol and whip off a series of shots that go through the heart of all antagonists, who, by the way, are seasoned military people turned cop, and, coincidentally, never wear a vest.
I'll start off by saying that I did enjoy the book, and I was eager to finish to see what happened. That having been said, there were some unanswered questions that bothered me.
I never found out why he was in put away for all those years. I felt like there was more to Varden's story, it could have been expanded on. I really liked the charecter he portrayed, with the exception of him undressing the dr with his eyes. That sort of turned the haunted aspect of him into more just sleazy, and I don't think (?) that's what he was meant to be. Why did he do what he did in the end?
This author has the ability to pull you into the story, but the characters need more depth. What was so amaseing about this woman that he loved her at first sight, didn't even need to know her name, but was willing to give up everything for her. Give me a back story about the marriage that went wrong. Maybe I'm trying to make what was suppose to be a cheesy cheap book into something that was better. I wouldn't have gotten it had I saw the cover picture first, but it was actually a decent book.
I really did enjoy this book, although it has quite a bit of murder and violence. Any romance in this book takes a back seat to what is going on with one very sick and evil sheriff (I'm not spoiling anything here because you'll find out who the really bad guy is right away). There is an anti-hero in this book and he is written both sympathically and in raw detail. He is not perfect by any means but he's real and honest. He has a conscience. The woman who he falls for instantly is an abused wife looking for salvation from her hell. It takes a good portion of the book for them to come together and when they do it's raw, quick, and fairly unemotional. It's protrayed as it should be soulmates coming together in the heat of the moment. They cannot stay away from one another; not for long.

Don't expect hearts and flowers in this book. That I found it in the Romantic/Suspense section is a fluke. It should be in the Thriller/Suspense section with a minor mention towards romance. If you like graphic storytelling; this is your book. Once you start it you will be compelled to finish it because you HAVE to know that the bad guy will eventually get what is coming to him. You'll get it but only after a whole lot of bad things happen via the hand of one very bad sheriff.

The one thing that bugged me is the ending. It's quick and then over. I wondered how Varden finally developed his conscience. What happened to him to bring him to want justice for Lloyd (our anti-hero)? When we were left with Varden before (epilogue of one year later) he is taken off for his own misdeeds. BOOM....one year later Varden is helping the man he spent the whole book trying to trap back into prison? Huh? I guess we were to assume that Lloyd went back to prison for that year because he broke his parole? Then Jamie is in the courtroom waiting for him. Leslie is there as well and for such a prominent character who almost died and survives we needed some fill-in as to what brought her to the epilogue scene. I wish we readers had more answers as to what brought us to this ending and what happened in between for some very important characters.

Don't get me wrong here. I really liked this book. It's not my usual romance-fare. I enjoy the romantic/suspence genre and this really doesn't fit that usual mold due to lack of romance. The writing is gripping and it flows beautifully. I would recommend it highly for someone who likes to read crime, murder, suspense, and bits of passion.

NOTE if killing, violence, baby-shaking, and morque details offend you don't read this.
